How do I play shared / split screen on Rocket League?

Rocket League is one of the most popular multiplayer games in the world. It is a soccer game with remote-controlled cars instead of players. It is particularly known for its multiple online game modes. However, it offers a feature that is not really put forward by the developers: the possibility for two to four players to play in split screen mode, on the same console, other teams. This mode is only available on Xbox, Playstation, and PC. So no split-screen mode for Nintendo Switch. The game’s official website explains the method to get there, but the instructions are unclear. We decided to make you a tutorial that is more explicit and easy to follow.

The Nintendo Switch version is only playable with a single player in local mode.

Before you start, what you need

To access Rocket League’s split-screen mode, you must have the following:

  • An Xbox One/Series X/Series S or Playstation 4 or 5 console, or a PC.
  • As many controllers as there are players
  • Each player must have an Epic Games account
  • Each player must have a Playstation account (for Playstation 4 or 5) or an Xbox account (for Xbox One/Series X/Series S)

As Rocket League is a free to download game, there is no need for a Playstation Plus or Xbox Live Gold membership to play it online.

1) Connect all controllers to the PC or console

Choose or create a profile that matches the player on your console.

2) Start the game Rocket League

Once started and present on the main menu of the game, press the Options button (Playstation), Menu (Xbox), + (if you play with a Switch controller on PC) or Start (for old people who know that this is the original name of the same button) with EACH of the player’s controllers 2, 3, 4.

Player 1 does not need to do this, since he has started the game.

3) Choose your game mode

Now that all controllers and players are in the game, choose the game mode with Player 1 controller that suits you from those available in multiplayer.

You can then start the game in order to play in split screen mode!

Note that it is possible to invite friends connected online to your local group of players, and/or play against strangers online with your local group of players as well.

The game is very flexible and that’s one of those great advantages.

To remove a local player from your party

In the main menu, scroll down below the menu (below Settings), select the player you want to delete, and click on it, and click Remove.
