It offers a diverse range of courses such as: <em>Introduction to<\/em> Video Game Design, Video Game <em>History<\/em>, Video Games and Social Issues, Video Games, <em>Player Identity and Communities<\/em>, Video Game Industry, Video <em>Game Analysis, Video<\/em> Games, <em>Technology and Emerging Practices,<\/em> and <em><em>Video Games and Transmediality<\/em>. <em><\/em><\/em> The objective of this specialization is to help students develop critical thinking about the most lucrative cultural industry of our time, that of video games, by familiarizing them with the problems and issues related to its communicational, social and technical dimensions.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2013, UQAM&#8217;s Faculty of Communication has also offered a  <a href=\"https:\/\/etudier.uqam.ca\/programme\/maitrise-communication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Concentration in Video Games and Gamification in<\/a> the Master&#8217;s in Communication program with the following courses:  <em>Research seminar on video<\/em> games, Video games and <em>human-machine<\/em> communication, <em>Video games and society<\/em>, <em>Video game practices and player communities<\/em> and <em>Gamification, culture and communication<\/em>. Each year, the program welcomes a small number of students, which allows for the formation of a friendly living environment. In addition, students in the program have the opportunity to get involved in activities outside of the school curriculum, including those of the renowned research group  <a href=\"https:\/\/homoludens.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Homo Ludens<\/a>, the creation of a game for the  <em>Festival Montr\u00e9al joue<\/em> and the <em>Nuit blanche<\/em>, writing an article for the magazine <a href=\"http:\/\/vectis.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\n  <em>Vectis<\/em>\n<\/a>, organizing the annual conference <a href=\"https:\/\/homoludens.ca\/programmes-de-en-jeux\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">En\/jeux<\/a>, and exploring creative video games at <a href=\"https:\/\/sabotage.homoludens.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sabotage<\/a>. Indeed, video game studies is now an academic discipline in its own right, with its own approaches, theories, concepts, conferences, publishing venues, and programs, which requires the hiring of new professors and teachers. That said, most of the graduates of this program are now working in user research or community development positions at well-known studios such as Ubisoft, Square Enix, Behaviour Interactive, Eidos and WB Games.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"844\" height=\"557\" src=\"https:\/\/ecranpartage.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Etudes-jeux-video-UQAM-Ecran-Partage-4.jpg\" alt=\"Video Game Studies UQAM Shared Screen 4\" class=\"wp-image-26349\" style=\"width:735px;height:auto\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecranpartage.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Etudes-jeux-video-UQAM-Ecran-Partage-4.jpg 844w, https:\/\/ecranpartage.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Etudes-jeux-video-UQAM-Ecran-Partage-4-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ecranpartage.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Etudes-jeux-video-UQAM-Ecran-Partage-4-768x507.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 844px) 100vw, 844px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Photo credit: Gabrielle Tr\u00e9panier-Jobin<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Courses in both programs are taught by experienced lecturers and internationally renowned professors. <a href=\"https:\/\/maudebonenfant.homoludens.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maude Bonenfant<\/a>, Ph.D. D., for example, is recognized for her work on the appropriation of games by gamers, gaming communities, ethical issues concerning video games, and <em>gamblification <\/em>of mobile games. <a href=\"https:\/\/gabrielletrepanier.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gabrielle Tr\u00e9panier-Jobin<\/a>, Ph.D. D., for her part, is known for her work on video game stereotypes and their misuse, player immersion, as well as issues of equity, diversity and inclusion in the video game industry. As for <a href=\"https:\/\/professeurs.uqam.ca\/professeur\/richert.fabien\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fabien Richert<\/a>, Ph.D. He has developed a specialized expertise on the links between video games and phenomena such as artificial intelligence, ideology, postmodernity, semiotics and critical theory.
