What parents need to know

Just Dance 2024 is part of the Just Dance franchise. The concept of this game, like its predecessors, is that players must dance by imitating as much as possible the characters on the screen. The songs to which players are invited to dance are known and generally popular. However, it is not possible to add custom songs.

To play Just Dance 2024 Edition, equip yourself with a controller (on Nintendo Switch), or your phone (on Nintendo Switch, Playstation 5 or Xbox Series), launch the song you want from the game’s selection and dance to the beat!

Note that on Nintendo Switch, it is possible to play with joy-cons or phone for people who do not have a controller.

The 2024 edition of Just Dance features the following songs:

  • “A Night in the Palace of Versailles” by The Just Dance Orchestra

If you take the Just Dance + subscription you will have access to many additional songs, often from previous episodes, but not only.

Just Dance 2024 is available in digital format (download).

It is possible to find game boxes in stores. However, they do not contain a cartridge or a physical disc, but only a code to enter into the console’s online stores (Playstation Store, Nintendo eShop or Microsoft Store). We recommend buying the game directly on the Internet since it is not necessary to buy an empty box, especially from an ecological point of view.

A Nintendo Switch key for the game in its Ultimate version was provided to us by the publisher for review purposes, but this does not influence our opinion of the game.

Evaluation

There are no scary scenes or violence in Just Dance 2024.

Some dancers wear leotards, but nothing too shocking.

Since the songs are chosen amongst the known and popular ones, they may contain somewhat inappropriate words and phrases, but nothing particularly vulgar.

Songs can be about alcohol, being sexy, or depression.

The Just Dance+ subscription gives access to playlists made for children, in which no foul words appear.

“Some song lyrics contain the word ‘hell’, as well as references to violence (e.g., ‘Maybe I should kill myself/Blame it on my A.D.D. baby’) and suggestive material (e.g., ‘I’m a blessing of a body to love on/If you want it bad tonight.’)

The principle of the game encourages dancing, moving, and exercising on personalized playlists, but it also encourages a lot to pay the Just Dance + subscription.

It is a game that requires you to move a lot and to do cardio. However, the songs all have their level of difficulty, and it is possible to dance them all with practice.

The Just Dance + subscription gives access to seated dances and to dances with no jumps.

Just Dance 2024 has a base cost, but it is possible to purchase the Deluxe Edition and the Ultimate Edition.

The only variations between the different editions of the game is the number of days of the subscription included or not in your edition.

In addition, the game is a great incentive to buy the Just Dance+ subscription to get access to more songs.

Songs are added as the year progresses.

Be careful to cancel the automatic renewal if you no longer want the subscription!

Finally, playing online multiplayer requires you to pay for the subscription for your console AND the Just Dance + subscription.

Local game modes

Only one mode to choose one song at a time from the catalog of Just Dance 2024, or Just Dance +, and another mode to choose its playlists pre-designed by Ubisoft.

There is no way to create your own Playlists at the moment.

Our opinion

The concept of Just Dance 2024 is in line with the franchise: dance to well-known songs by imitating the movements of colorful characters. It is a great activity for an evening with friends or family and to motivate yourself to move more.

However, the emphasis new editions of Just Dance put on the Just Dance+ subscription can become frustrating in the long run.

It’s worth noting that the Just Dance+ subscription doesn’t give access to ALL dances from previous games, but a selection of those with which Ubisoft has negotiated the rights at the moment.

Also, the 2023 and 2024 versions of the game still do not have the Playlist and World Tour modes of the previous installments.

The only possible way is to choose the song you want or a playlist that has already been designed and play it.

Of course, you can play with several people locally, but I can’t find the online multiplayer mode.

The “Sweat” mode for exercise is there, it just counts the calories burned according to the songs and movements performed.

The menus are much better and faster than on Just Dance 2019 that I tested at the time.

On the other hand, there are still untimely crashes in the middle of the song.

Suddenly, while you are dancing, the game will “encounter an error” and close. And it’s VERY disappointing. It’s a very simple game, with very little difficulty in terms of console performance. It shouldn’t crash that much.

I met several during my test, and it stopped me in my tracks.

To conclude, there is a way to have a lot of fun with Just Dance, whether it’s this episode or another, however, you shouldn’t be demanding with the quality of the product, and it’s a shame because the price is very demanding.

With a price that varies between $80 + tax and $110 + tax, you’d expect a menu and dance game that works well with multiple game modes. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

Wait for price drops and potential updates to the game.

You can fall back on the previous versions, but Just Dance Unlimited (the subscription of the previous versions) will be discontinued soon and you end up with the minimum number of songs per disc or cartridge (40 – 45 songs).
