Nintendo resurrects competition with Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition!

Wondering how long it would take you to collect all the rooms in a room in Super Mario Bros., collect the sword in The Legend of Zelda, or complete the first level of Super Mario Bros. 3? What if you could do it faster than your friends? And even better, faster than anyone else in the entire world? You’ll soon have the answer!

Starting July 18, 2024, Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition will launch these global (or local) competitions on the Nintendo Switch family of systems!

For nostalgic fans of the NES, a deluxe edition of Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition is also available. It includes:

  • the physical version of the game,
  • 5 collector pins,
  • 13 special cards representing each classic NES game included in the challenges,
  • as well as a replica of the gold NES game cartridge (for decorative purposes only, with a stand included) as a tribute to the original 1990 event: the Nintendo World Championships.

Inspired by the memorable Nintendo World Championships that took place in 1990, 2015 and 2017, Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition offers players mini-challenges from classic hit games. With over 150 engaging time trial challenges from 13 classic NES games, this game is sure to appeal to veterans and newcomers alike.

Start by warming up by breaking your own records in the Single Player Time Trial mode (unlocking new challenges and exclusive pins along the way), then up to 8 players can compete locally in Multiplayer mode.

Nintendo Switch Online members can switch to World Championship mode to submit their high scores in five challenges that change each week, and compete for a global leaderboard.

Get ready for time trial challenges from the following NES games:

  • Balloon Fight
  • Donkey Kong
  • Excitebike
  • Ice Climber
  • Kid Icarus
  • Kirby’s Adventure
  • Metroid
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros. 2
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition Deluxe Bundle ($79.99 CAD MSRP) and the digital version of the game ($39.99 CAD MSRP) are now available for pre-order at select Canadian retailers.

Additionally, those looking for an authentic NES gaming experience can purchase an optional pair of Nintendo Entertainment System controllers ($79.99 CAD MSRP) available for purchase for paid Nintendo Switch Online members.
