What parents need to know

Red Dead Redemption 2 is an open-world action-adventure video game developed and published by Rockstar Games, released in October 2018. The game takes place in the American West at the end of the nineteenth century, in the midst of the era of the conquest of the West. The player takes on the role of Arthur Morgan, an outlaw member of a gang led by Dutch van der Linde. The game is rated M for mature (recommended for people 17 years and older).

The game offers a vast and open world, in which the player can freely explore vast expanses of wild lands, forests, mountains and cities. The map is huge, detailed and full of stunning scenery and historical details. The player can interact with non-player characters, take missions and quests, steal horses and fight against bandits or enemies.

In the end, it’s very similar to Grand Theft Auto, but with cowboys.

The gameplay is fluid and offers a wide variety of actions and choices. Players can shoot, ride through the campaign, hunt animals, perform missions, loot convoys, and much more. The player can also interact with the members of his gang, talk to them, help them or fight them.

The story is an exciting and dark epic, told over several chapters, that follows the lives of Arthur Morgan and his band of outlaws in their quest to survive in a rapidly changing world. The game is filled with emotional moments, dramatic twists and memorable characters.

Evaluation

The game allows a fairly pronounced level of violence that goes according to the player’s style of play. It is possible to kill innocent characters, both with weapons and with bare hands, to slaughter pets, etc. The game is not scary or horrifying, however.

There is suggestive content, the character may interact with prostitutes, hear/utter vulgar remarks or visit brothels.

Many clues and approvals require to be able to read well. Since the game’s audio is only available in English, players who don’t speak English should rely on reading subtitles to understand the game. The characters have a very familiar and often offensive level of language.

The game is a story of betrayal and brotherhood, there is a moral and the ending is all in all satisfying and positive. However, this is a game where you play as a criminal. So morality is a bit twisted.

It is possible to change the difficulty during the game and use parameters that give a hand during battles, for players a little less agile (automatic selection, etc.). The game presents a certain challenge, however, even at normal difficulty. Player must know how to operate the 3D camera.

On achète le jeu une fois. Microtransactions dans le mode de jeu en ligne seulement.

The only possible microtransactions are in the online mode, and it is possible to have a lot of fun without paying a single penny.

Local game modes

Red Dead Redemption 2 features different game modes to allow players to enjoy a variety of gaming experiences. Here is a list of game modes available in Red Dead Redemption 2:

  • Story: This is the main mode of the game, which follows the story of Arthur Morgan and his band of outlaws through different chapters. Players must complete missions and quests to progress through the story.
  • Free Exploration: In this mode, players can explore the game’s open world freely, without following the main story. They can hunt, fish, explore and interact with non-player characters.
  • Challenges: Challenges are specific tasks that players must complete to earn rewards. There are different types of challenges, such as hunting challenges, fishing challenges, survival challenges, and shooting challenges.
  • Epilogue: After completing the main story, players can play in the epilogue, which follows the story of John Marston after the events of the main game.

In summary, Red Dead Redemption 2 offers a variety of game modes to allow players to choose their own gaming experience. Whether you prefer to follow the main story, explore the open world, or take on specific challenges, there’s something for all types of players, even in local mode.

Online Game Modes

Red Dead Redemption 2 has an online multiplayer mode called Red Dead Online. It allows players to play with other players from all over the world in a continuous online environment. Players can create their own character, choose their skills, appearance, and equipment, then explore the game’s open world and participate in various activities.

In Red Dead Online, players can form teams with other players to complete cooperative missions, such as robberies, scavenger hunts, and convoy escorts. They can also compete in competitive game modes, such as horse racing, duels or team battles.

In addition to missions and activities, Red Dead Online also offers customization and progression features to allow players to upgrade their character and equipment. Players can earn money by completing missions and selling items, which they can then spend on weapons, clothing, and horses.

Rockstar Games has also regularly added new content to Red Dead Online since its release, including major content updates like Frontier Pursuits and Naturalist, which have added new roles and activities for players.

Expansions/Add-ons (DLC)

There are no expansions at the moment (fingers crossed for a new installment of Undead Nightmare, but without too many expectations), although the online game mode is still regularly the subject of important and free updates.

Our opinion

The game received rave reviews for its design, story, gameplay, and outstanding soundtrack. It has won numerous awards, including Best Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2018.

For those who already knew and loved the first installment of the series as well as for those who discover the universe of Red Dead Redemption with this second game, it is an adventure full of twists and discoveries. We can only gasp in front of the incredible level of detail, both on the side of artificial intelligence, as on the side of environments and animations. It’s surprising at every turn.

This game is directly reminiscent of other Rockstar games of the same era: the shooting and fighting system, the level of language and the degree of attainable violence are all similar. If you don’t like this type of gameplay or outlaw cowboy stories disgust you, chances are you don’t like this game as much as others.

In conclusion, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a captivating and immersive video game that offers an exciting and memorable gaming experience. It is a must-have for all fans of action-adventure games and open-world games. This is undoubtedly one of the best games of recent years, both on the story side and the technical side.
