Review – Spirit City: Lofi Sessions Explained to Parents

What parents need to know

Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is a playful concentration tool, developed by Mooncube Games and released on April 8, 2024.

This game is an invitation to create a peaceful work environment with a Lo-Fi soundtrack and to collect little spirit companions that quietly manifest according to the parameters of the environment.

More of a work tool than a game, Spirit City: Lofi Sessions has a very simple linear progression system. It has the player collect the spirits that appear accordingly to combinations of scenery and activities, and the levelling up system comes with in-game currency that can be spent to unlock additional customization choices.

Elements of customization allows to choose the character’s appearance, the spirit that accompanies the character, and several elements of the scenery such as the walls, the desk, and the bed. In Spirit City: Lofi Sessions, it is possible to choose between 4 Lo-Fi playlists, 12 continuous ambient sounds, and a built-in web player. Some ambient sounds affect elements of the décor such as the temperature visible through the window and the fireplace. For these sounds, the user can choose to only hear the sound, to only see the visual effects, or to experience both. It is also possible to choose the character’s activity.

A few productivity tools are included in this concentration-helping game: a timer, a customizable to-do list, a journal tool, and a list to note down one’s habits according to the days of the week. It is interesting to note that the timer refers to the Pomodoro technique, which consists in having regular cycles of concentrated work and breaks (usually 25 minutes of work and 5 minutes of break).

Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is a suitable game for audiences of all ages, but may not be particularly useful for very young users.

Evaluation

Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is a gamified concentration software, so all possible environment-creating combinations are calming and peaceful. There are no action or horror scenes.

This game does not contain any nudity or sexual innuendo.

It’s a game that does not require a lot of reading. The tutorial takes only a few minutes to explain the different customization possibilities, and the Spiritdex lists all the spirits found, offering for each one a cute description.

Since Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is a tool for focus, the underlying message is to create your own peaceful work environment and to stay focused on the tasks at hand.

It’s a very easy-to-use app that is designed to run in the background when the user is in a work session.

All customization elements are included with the purchase of the game on Steam.

Items that cost virtual currency do not require you to spend actual money, as the virtual currency accumulates as the app rolls and the player uses its features.

Our opinion

Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is a very enjoyable concentration tool. The visual aspect is soothing, the spirit companions and their descriptions are cute, and the tools for productivity can be very useful.

The timer and the to-do list help to structure one’s work sessions and to visualize one’s progress when it comes to daily tasks. Music playlists and ambient sounds offer a very calming background soundtrack, and the ability to use the web music player adds a lot to the customization of one’s work environment. The customization tools on the left side of the screen are easy to access and their use is pretty instinctive.

In conclusion, it is a pleasant concentration tool, which we recommend if you like Lo-Fi ambient videos, especially if you would like to customize your own, whether it is for personal purposes or to stream.
